Friends and Neighbors: Homegrown landscaping company celebrates new space

If you live in southeastern Connecticut and especially Ledyard, you’ve probably seen the bright orange and green vehicles of Spicer’s Lawn Care and Landscape Design. Those cars and trucks now have a new home on Lorenz Parkway, which was officially opened with a ribbon cutting on Nov. 30.

Owner Zack Spicer, who started the business in 2014 after working for his father’s, said many companies like his don’t have a dedicated space to store and work on the heavy machinery they use.

“It legitimizes us more as a landscaping firm than running out of your garage,” he said. “It’s professional, and it’s nice to have an area where I can store my equipment and work on equipment.”

He also likes having a centralized location where he can have the business office, his employees can meet and customers can stop by.

“It’s kind of like everything for us,” he said, adding it was important for him to be in Ledyard. “It’s where I want to be and where I’m supposed to be.”

Spicer said everything worked out perfectly in regard to the property, which previously had been used as an auto glass shop. He said he received a lot of support from the community, especially the economic development commission, which hosted the ribbon cutting in conjunction with its Small Business Saturday offerings.

He said he wanted to be more visible than other landscaping companies, utilizing social media and print advertising to promote the company’s work, and its growth has shown the success of those campaigns. It was also voted by customers as the best landscaping company in The Day’s “Best Of” contest two years in a row.

While he does some plowing during the winter, Spicer said the focus of the business is the creation of new landscapes for customers. He said his favorite projects are transforming neglected properties, and they do a lot of walkways, retaining walls and other features as well as excavation work.

“It’s a nice feeling to go from job to job and help people and to see what you’ve done cleaning it up,” he said.

As a homegrown entrepreneur in town — he’s a 2007 Ledyard High School graduate and his family has lived in the area since the 1600s — Spicer said he wants to help young people in the community develop their own business ideas and bring them to life.
