State expected to approve grant for Stonington Free Library renovations

Stonington -- State Rep. Kate Rotella, D-Stonington, has announced the State Bond Commission is expected approve a $145,000 grant for the Stonington Free Library when it meets Wednesday.

The grant is expected to cover part of the $290,000 cost associated with a current project to improve handicapped accessibility and make minor renovations to the facility.

Other towns scheduled to receive a portion of almost $3 million in funding are Greenwich, Ridgefield, Weston, New Milford, Danbury, Putnam and Naugatuck.

"I am thrilled to see our library project that will facilitate access by disabled patrons included in this upcoming bonding agenda," Rotella said. "This plan is an important priority for our community and I am grateful the governor was able to accommodate this request for us."

Library Director Belinda de Kay, added, "We are so excited to see our vision of providing a Stonington Free Library for the 21st century come one step closer to reality! Our aim to provide increased access and enhanced services for all has been truly a community effort, from its roots in the surveys and focus groups that defined our goals, to the fundraising efforts which have brought together awards from state and local governments, foundations and private individuals. We would like to extend a special thanks to the CT State Library for establishing the public library construction program, and to the governor and our local representatives for their efforts in placing it on the Bonding Commission agenda."
