    Groton town manager's contract extended

Groton — The Town Council voted this past week to extend the town manager’s contract, adding an additional year so the agreement now ends on July 4, 2025.

The council approved a 1 percent merit raise for Town Manager John Burt and to increase the employer contribution to $1,500 annually for the deferred compensation plan, HSA or 529 plan of his choice. The council said the decision followed a positive performance review.

Councilor Portia Bordelon said at Tuesday's Town Council meeting that she has only been on the council for a short time, but her interactions with Burt have all been positive and when she was on the Representative Town Meeting he attended all those meetings.

She added that "he puts a lot of heart and soul into this, and I think it's an appropriate merit raise, and I look forward to the extension and more to come."

Burt said by email that his goals for this year “include seeking opportunities for regionalization/cost sharing with other municipalities; seeking other ways to control the budget; and increase public outreach/communication.”

He has been Groton's town manager since July 2017.
