Holocaust survivor to share his story in Groton

Groton — A Holocaust survivor will be sharing his story at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus next week.

Endre "Andy" Sarkany will give a talk from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the campus auditorium, 1084 Shennecossett Road. The event is free and open to the public.

"Mr. Sarkany was born in Budapest, Hungary, and the building in which he lived was located inside the Budapest ghetto, where he remained during the Holocaust," according to the event notice from the Mystic & Noank Library. He eventually immigrated to the United States after World War II, "when Hungary became a communist nation under the Soviet regime."

The event was initially scheduled for the library but has been moved to Avery Point to accommodate more people due to high interest in the event.

"Over the past 10 years, Mr. Sarkany has been speaking to audiences about his personal experiences during the Holocaust, living under the brutality of the Soviet regime in Hungary, and finding a home in the United States," the announcement said.

More information about Sarkany is available on the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center website, hhrecny.org. For more about the event, visit its Facebook page at bit.ly/SarkanyUCAP.
