Groton Senior Center earns national award for Baker’s Battle event

Groton — The National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers honored the Groton Senior Center with a 2019 Programs of Excellence Award for its Baker’s Battle event, a competition of professional and recreational bakers in which the community is invited to be “tasters.”

The Groton Senior Center is among 16 centers recognized “for innovative, creative, and replicable programs for older adults.”

“The Groton Senior Center is an important destination for older adults in Southeastern Connecticut, and we work hard to keep our programs fun and educational for our members,” center Supervisor Mary Jo Riley said in a statement. “We are proud and honored to receive a NISC Programs of Excellence award, and hope that other senior centers across the country will be able to replicate the Baker’s Battle program and also benefit their members.”

More information about the Groton Senior Center is available at grotonrec.com. A list of the 2019 NISC Program of Excellence Award winners is available at ncoa.org/NISCAwards.
