L+M Hospital revealed as anonymous donor for city purchase of future park

New London — Lawrence + Memorial Hospital on Thursday revealed itself to be the anonymous donor covering the $75,000 purchase price of a contaminated parcel at 43 Hempstead St.

The hospital donation is part of a coordinated effort by the city and Freedom Trail Neighborhood Association to create a park at the long-vacant 0.6-acre site situated in a densely populated neighborhood.

The City Council approved the purchase from Shiloh Development Corporation on Monday. Patrick Green, president and CEO of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, said in a statement that transformation of the site into green space supports L+M’s work in improving the health and wellness of the community it serves.

“We have a vision to enhance the lives of the people we serve which includes being pro-active as it relates to health and wellness,” he said. “We all know what a little extra open space in our lives can do to improve the way we feel. An expanse of green can help us breathe easier, reduce stress and simply feel more positive about who we are and where we live. These things are at the root of improving community health overall.”
