Waterford — The crowd along the sand at Harkness Memorial State Park on Thursday included more than just waders and sunbathers.

Blanche Serban, an artist based out of Mansfield, was working on an oil painting of a beach scene at the park. She has been working on a project painting en plein air every day, and says she frequently travels to the shoreline for a change of scenery.

"It's nice to get outside in the fresh air," she said, "especially now."

She was among those who headed to water to enjoy temperatures that neared 80 degrees in the New London area. High temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70s through the weekend.
