Accused Gold Star Bridge wrong-way driver charged again with DWI the next day

Groton — A Putnam woman charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after police say she drove the wrong way on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge on Friday morning was charged by Plainfield police on Saturday night with driving under the influence after she nearly crashed on Interstate 395 while driving with her headlights off.

Plainfield police said that on Saturday at 8:49 p.m. they responded to the parking lot of a Dollar General store in their town’s Central Village section for a report of an erratic driver. There, they found a Kia Sportage driven by Amy Peterson, 29, parked across several parking spots. Police said Peterson displayed “multiple signs of intoxication” and they placed her under arrest after administering a field sobriety test.

Plainfield police said motorists had called them to report Peterson was traveling south on Interstate 395 when she nearly crashed multiple times while traveling with her headlights off. When she exited the highway at Exit 89 she stopped in the middle of the roadway, police said, then made her way onto East Main Street and into the Dollar General lot.

Peterson was being held on a $2,500 cash or surety bond and is scheduled to appear at the Danielson Superior Court on Tuesday.

On Friday, Peterson was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and traveling the wrong way on a limited access highway by state police. That arrest occurred after a trooper parked in the Groton turnaround on the bridge on Interstate 95 saw a vehicle enter the highway from Route 184 heading southbound in the northbound lanes at 2:49 a.m.

Troopers were able to stop her on the bridge after they say she nearly struck one of their cruisers.

Peterson was released on a $500 nonsurety bond in that case and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on July 23.
