East Lyme High School shifts to full distance learning after three cases of COVID-19

East Lyme — After two more positive cases of COVID-19 were reported at East Lyme High School this week, the district moved to shift students to full distance learning Oct. 8-21.

In a letter to parents and guardians on Wednesday, Superintendent Jeffrey Newton detailed the decision to postpone in-person learning for high school students.

“East Lyme Public Schools has been notified that two additional members of our school community (East Lyme High School only) have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19),” he wrote. “We now have three cases at the high school within the last week. After discussions with Ledge Light Health District and our Medical Advisor, we are moving to a two-week period of remote learning for high school students only.”

In-person classes and after-school activities, including sports, will resume on Oct. 22. The high school was closed Monday after the district received a report of a positive COVID-19 case connected to the school. High school students worked remotely Monday and resumed in-person learning at the school Tuesday.
