Seniors trick-or-treated to lunch with Halloween theme
Groton — In the spirit of Halloween, staff and volunteers at the Senior Center got creative with the drive-thru lunch program Thursday.
The theme was zombie apocalypse, and on the menu was mummified meatballs in potato skin coffins over splattered brain sauce with wormy mixed beans and blood clot biscuits. Those items were really meatball-stuffed potatoes, marinara sauce and mixed green beans, with biscuits in a cherry sauce for dessert.
For the occasion, some staff and volunteers — and the center's mascot, Gigi, which is a figure that stands inside the center's entrance and is always dressed to fit every occasion — were dressed in Halloween costumes.
Even the Groton Public Library staff and volunteers got in on the fun. Community Services Librarian Kim Balentine, dressed as a skeleton, was asking seniors Halloween-related trivia questions while library volunteer Pam Tankard, dressed as a frog, was handing out candy for every correct answer. Balentine said since the library and senior center are neighbors, they come across the parking lot on special occasions to play games with the seniors as they pass through to pick up their meal.
The senior center has drive-thru lunch every week Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
