Taking Care of Business: Hometown cooking at Olde Tymes

Olde Tymes Restaurant on Main Street in Norwich boasts of being one of the few establishments in the area to serve a full roasted turkey meal with all the trimmings.

The holiday meal costs $14.99 and includes turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, and veggies. A wide assortment of homemade baked pies is also part of the meal. Eight different kinds of the decadent dessert are made daily.

Olde Tymes has been serving comfort food and favorite dinners for 37 years. The menu includes fish and chips, chicken fried steak, and pasta dishes. They serve breakfast all day.

The spacious restaurant seats up to 80 people and sports a tiny gift shop that sells jewelry, stuffed animals, and other items.

Olde Tymes owner Rodney Green has been a business entrepreneur to other restaurants including Hill Billies BBQ from 1994 to 1996. A third of Olde Tymes revenue comes from the catering company that services venues such as the Essex Dinner Train and currently the St. Jude Common in the industrial park in Norwich.

The pandemic caused the local restaurant to cut back its hours considerably, staying open between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Upon the onset of the global pandemic, Olde Tymes managed to contribute to the community by organizing a farmer’s market that offered toilet paper, paper towels, and food items.

Rodney Green is from Memphis, Tenn., and has been living in Montville since 1981. He opened Olde Tymes Family Restaurant just three years later and looks forward to serving the public for many more years to come.

    Lisa Shasha lives in Norwich.
