Clark Lane Middle School closed Monday and Tuesday due to staff absences

Waterford – Clark Lane Middle School will be closed for in-person learning Monday and Tuesday because of staff absences.

The high school will remain open for hybrid learning on Monday despite reporting five people positive for COVID-19 on Friday and learning of a sixth positive case over the weekend.

Superintendent Thomas Giard offered an update in an email message Sunday evening after promising on Friday that the district would assess the situation at Waterford High School.

“While we did have one additional positive case this weekend at the high school, Waterford High School will open as scheduled tomorrow, Monday, December 7, 2020,” Giard wrote.

Clark Lane Middle School has a “high number of staff absences,” Giard wrote, and for that reason, “we are unable to conduct in-person learning at this time at CLMS.” All students will be distance learning on Monday and Tuesday, and CLMS offices will remain open.

“As of right now, we intend to resume in-school instruction on Thursday, December 10, at Clark Lane,” Giard wrote. “Should anything need to change with that plan, we will communicate as soon as possible.”

Giard explained the staff absences, and why he thinks CLMS will be ready to start back up with hybrid learning by Thursday, later Sunday evening.

"The combination of normal absences for a variety of reasons plus staff in quarantine puts us in a situation where we don't have enough staff and also allows us to maintain our mitigation measures," he said. "We are anticipating some staff returning off of quarantine, which would hopefully allow us to open as scheduled on Thursday."
