City of Groton to extend closure of municipal building

Groton — The City of Groton will extend the closure of the Municipal Building to the public, which originally was planned to reopen on Dec. 14, for another week.

"Due to public health concerns the City of Groton will extend its building closure by one week and currently plans to reopen the Municipal Building on December 21st," the announcement on the city's Facebook page said. "All business can be done via phone, online or by appointment."

City Mayor Keith Hedrick said by phone that the reason for the extension is to allow time to deep clean the facility, particularly in the common areas and the restrooms, to ensure it's ready to open.

When the municipal building reopens to the public, it will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, he said. A greeter will direct people where to go or contact staff members who can take the individuals where they need to go.

Hedrick said a couple of employees within the municipality and Groton Utilities tested positive for COVID-19 over the last couple of weeks, but it was not widespread and those employees did not have contact with the public. The city has taken measures to minimize the spread of the coronavirus, including the continued cleaning, use of masks, 6 feet of distancing, hand washing and generous use of hand sanitizer.

He said the city is working with Ledge Light Health District and following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Ledge Light guidelines and the governor's executive orders.
