People urged to avoid swimming near Norwich, other areas in Elsa's wake

State health and environmental officials are urging people to avoid swimming and other activities that could bring them into contact with certain waterways in the wake of Tropical Storm Elsa.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Department of Public Health advise against water recreation and swimming in the Quinnipiac River, near urban areas and in or around Norwich, Bridgeport, Hartford, Norwalk, Wallingford and the greater New Haven areas for 48 hours after the storm. These are areas that experienced discharges of untreated sewage during the storm and pose a health hazard, the departments said in a news release.

The state’s shoreline beaches are not in close proximity to known discharges, DEEP said in the release, and those areas remain open. The department said it would test the water quality at those beaches early next week.

Additionally, Stonington’s Shellfish Commission has closed three conditional shellfishing areas due to the heavy rain from Elsa: Area A, Area B and Outer Quiambaug Cove. They will remain closed to the harvesting of clams, oysters and mussels for a minimum of seven days, commission Chairman Donald L. Murphy said in a news release. People may call the commission’s information line, (860) 599-7575, for more information and status updates.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
