Man overboard training
Crew members from the Empire Fisheries scallop boats Invictus, Furious, and Regulus underwent safety training Monday at Town Dock in Stonington.
Kyra Dwyer, a civilian Fishing Vessel Inspector from Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, led the training, which included man-overboard, immersion suit and lifeboat procedures. Retired fisherman Alan Chaplaski, who often helps teach the skills to the local fishing crews, assisted Dwyer.
Joe Gilbert of Empire Fisheries, the owner of the boats, said that while the training is not legally mandated,"this is a profession, and we take it very serious as professionals."
The crews practiced man-overboard drills from the Invictus under way in Fishers Island Sound and practiced with the immersion suits, known as "Gumby suits," and the inflatable life raft at the beach adjacent to Town Dock.
