9/11 commemoration events will be held around the region
Memorial events are being held around the region this week for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Friday
The Rotary Club of the Stoningtons presents the annual memorial for Josh Piver and all victims of 9/11 at 9 a.m., Josh Piver Bench at Stonington Point, 1 Water St., Stonington. A Rotarian will lead in singing "Let There Be Peace on Earth" and Rob Simmons will lead in the singing of "God Bless America."
9/11 Commemoration at 9:30 a.m., Lyman Allyn Art Museum, McCourt 9/11 Memorial Garden, 625 Williams St., New London; to honor all 9/11 victims, especially former New London residents Ruth McCourt and her daughter, Juliana; invocation by Rev. Carolyn Patierno, Mayor Michael Passero will speak; reception will follow in the museum's Hendel Library; (860) 443-2545.
The Portuguese Holy Ghost Society in Stonington Borough will donate 50% of the proceeds from its dinner, 4-8 p.m., to the Josh Piver Memorial Scholarship.
Saturday
The U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard are leading a Memorial 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony at City Pier in New London at 8:30 a.m. The commemoration, part of the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival, will end with a flyover at 9:45 a.m.
Groton Elks Lodge 2163 is holding a ceremony to recall the events of 9/11, honor the victims, and celebrate those who volunteered in response. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the City of Groton Municipal Building, 295 Meridian St., and will include a procession, flag raising, narrative account of 9/11, and comments from local police and firefighters. There will be 2,977 flags on the lawn to honor the victims.
Freedom Plaza, Norwich City Hall, 100 Broadway. First responders and members of the Norwich Area Veterans Council will host a program at 10 a.m. to commemorate the more than 3,000 lives lost, including Madeline "Amy" Sweeney, a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11. Her father, William Todd, was a former Norwich resident. Damien Richards will recount his time at ground zero following the attacks. Tom Callinan, USMC veteran and NAVC member, will perform.
Several local restaurants and businesses will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Josh Piver Memorial Scholarship. They are the Captain Daniel Packer Inne, Oyster Club, Engine Room, Nana's Bakery and Pizza, Grass & Bone, Taquerio, Rio Salado, Jealous Monk, Dog Watch Café, Dog Watch Mystic, Macondo, Stonington Pizza Palace, Steak Loft, Go Fish, Breakwater, Red 36, Bravo Bravo, OMO and Cove Ledge Package Store.
5K River Run for the Fund, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ocean Beach Park to benefit the James A. Greenleaf Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Tribute to first responders and remembrance ceremony at Veterans Memorial Green in Waterford, 6:30 p.m.
