Old Lyme Food Share Garden hosts open house and work party

Old Lyme — The Old Lyme Food Share Garden will hold an open house and work session from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Volunteers are preparing the site, located at Town Woods Park behind the field house and playground, for the first harvest in the spring. All produce from the garden will be donated to area food pantries and food banks.

Organizer Jim Ward said the group already has installed an 8-foot deer fence and built three raised beds. Additional in-ground beds are being prepared and an irrigation system is being installed.

Ward said a successful crowdsourcing campaign raised $8,350 in the leadup to the June groundbreaking. Sustainable CT, a statewide group that helps empower communities to protect the environment, matched $7,500.

Upcoming projects include completing the irrigation system, installing electricity and putting up a storage shed. Updates and photos are available through Facebook, Instagram and lolfoodsharegarden.org.
