New London — The city is merging two celebratory events Sunday to create a daylong celebration focused on New London.

The community will come together for the annual “We Are New London,” or “Somos New London,” parade, followed by a Latin-themed “Eat in the Street” event.

“The parade was born out of a desire to showcase the richness of our city’s diversity among its people. We are beautiful! We are strong! We are United! We are New London!” parade Chairman Efraín Domínguez Jr. said.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on State Street. Afterward, State Street will be closed to traffic from 5 to 8 p.m. for the final Eat in the Street event of the season, with an array of Latin Heritage Month activities and entertainment options.

There will be live music by the Latin Essence Jazz Group from 4 to 7 p.m., and a performance by a local Peruvian dance group on the Parade Plaza from 7 to 8 p.m. Salsa lessons will be offered to those with their dancing shoes on. There will also be a live DJ and roaming entertainment. Food offerings include Uncle D’s BBQ and NoRA Cupcakes. Other vendors will line State Street. Ledge Light Health District will offer on-site coronavirus vaccinations.

The events will be capped by a fireworks display at 8 p.m. from the Water Street parking garage.
