New London's Tommie Major earns recreation award

New London — Longtime city Recreation Director Tommie Major on Tuesday was awarded the 2021 Distinguished Service Award from the Connecticut Recreation & Parks Association.

Major was recognized as an individual "who has made outstanding contributions over a significant number of years to the recreation and/or parks field." He accepted the award at a luncheon Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Hotel & Convention Center.

Donna Bailey, the co-chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission, wrote a letter to support Major’s nomination for the award.

“Tommie has devoted most of his life in educating, mentoring the youth of our city. At times he has been the financial backbone for many youths to pursue their dreams in a sport. He is key in making sure many are employed within our city for the playground groups and summer employment,” Bailey said. "Tommie believes in the potential of New London, the city where he was born and raised, and (which) he loves."

New London’s Chief Administrative Officer Steven Fields wrote a letter of congratulations and said the city was “truly grateful to you and your staff for the many programs and incredible opportunities and experiences provided in the City of New London.”
