Untreated wastewater discharged on Route 32 in Montville

Montville — On Tuesday, a small crack in a force main caused approximately 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to discharge to the ground on Route 32.

The main force, extending from the Avery II Pumping Station, discharged the wastewater from 2 to 6 p.m. near Route 2A.

Derek Albertson, superintendent of Montville's Water Pollution Control Authority, said the pumping station was bypassed to prevent further discharges and to allow repairs.

Emergency contractor B&W Landscaping and Paving worked with the Water Pollution Control Facility staff through the night to repair the pipe by 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Albertson said the facility staff acted in an organized manner to quickly respond to and remedy a significant problem in the collection system.

It was not clear whether or how nearby properties were affected. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified.
