    New London to host public hearing on proposed budget

    New London — The city’s Appropriating Board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday to discuss the proposed fiscal year 2022-23 budget.

    The hearing will start at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall of the STEM Magnet High School at 490 Jefferson Ave. The public hearing can be viewed on the City Council’s YouTube channel.

    Mayor Michael Passero presented a combined $98.67 million budget, with a $2.37 million or 2.46% increase from the current budget. City officials credit the rise in the city’s grand list with what is expected to be a 1.72% decrease in taxes if the budget is passed.

    The budget contains $53.45 million in government spending, a $1.66 million or 3.2% increase from the current budget. The budget contains $45.2 million in education funding, a 1.6% or $709,091 increase.

    The Appropriating Board is composed of the seven city council members and five members of the Board of Finance.
