The SFCMA (Sprague, Franklin, Canterbury and Mansfield-Ashford) All-Star team won the Intermediate Little League Connecticut State Championship last week.

The 12- and 13-year-old team is a combination of two District champions in District 11 (Sprague/Franklin/Canterbury) and District 12 (Mansfield/Ashford).

The team defeated Fairfield, 3-2, and then New London twice, 9-2, and 6-5 in the championship game to advance to the East Regionals in Dix Hills, N.Y., on Long Island.

The team opened play in that tournament on Friday, July 22.

The SFCMA pitching staff was led by Jacob Holmberg, Carter Stringer and Luke Drasdis. The trio led the team through the state tournament, allowing only five earned runs and having a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6-to-1.

The offense was led by Carter Stringer, tops on the team in hits and stolen bases, and Jimmy Boncoddo, who appeared in all three games as a substitute, delivering two home runs and seven RBIs, earning the team’s MVP.

There are nine teams in the East Regionals, representing Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The East Regional will take place through the championship game on July 28.

Little League covers the World Series cost, but not in the regionals, which is one step from the Intermediate Baseball World Series in Livermore, California from July 31-Aug. 7.
