    Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound holding open house Saturday

    New Haven ― U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, which covers the Sound from the New York border to Rhode Island border, is holding a free open house Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    The station is at 120 Woodward Ave. in New Haven.

    The Coast Guard invites the public to learn about its operations, partnerships, career opportunities and safe boating tips. Sector Commander Capt. Eva J. Van Camp is scheduled to give opening remarks at 9:30 a.m.

    According to a press release from the Coast Guard, members will guide tours of a 65-foot icebreaking tug, 29-foot response boat, and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. Search and rescue demonstrations are scheduled for 9:40 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the Honor Guard is scheduled to perform at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The Coast Guard Band will also perform, and the Connecticut National Guard will have displays.

    Visitors can park at East Shore Park, and security personnel can direct those needing special accommodations to spots on base. Adults must have a government-issued ID, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

    There will be added security screening, and all bags except small purses, diaper bags and medical bags are prohibited.
