Welcome to More Than a Month: Native Americans

When we embarked earlier this year in creating the More Than a Month special section, we made it clear that the intention of the section would be to cover communities that we don’t consistently hear from or properly give a voice to.

We wanted to learn about the culture, social issues and contributions they have made to southeastern Connecticut and beyond.

Our first issue on the Black community came out in February followed by Pride, Hispanic Heritage and now the latest on Native Americans.

I’m so proud of these issues. They were informative, educational and just so fun to read.

In this issue, we tackle head-on myths perpetuated against the Native community and what federal recognition actually means to them. We learn about cultural traditions and why elders hold elevated status in the tribes.

We are currently brainstorming on who we will feature next year. If you have any suggestions, please email me at i.larraneta@theday.com.

    Thank you,

Izaskun E. Larrañeta, managing editor and chair of The Day's Diversity Committee
