Montville ― Voters shifted the makeup of the Town Council on Tuesday, electing a Democratic majority to the seven-member council.

Unofficial vote totals show all five Democrats who ran were elected to the Town Council. No more than five people from any one party can hold a seat on the council because of minority representation rules.

Elected on Tuesday were Democrats Joe Jaskiewicz, Billy Caron, Tim May, Nick Sabilia and Kate Southard.

Caron, 56, owner of Caron Investment Properties and employee at W.R. Allen Co., received the highest number of votes of all the 11 candidates.

Republicans Robert Yuchniuk and Kevin Lathrop also earned seats on the Council.

Mayoral candidate Tom McNally, the current chairman of the Town Council, also ran for a seat on the council and lost.

“Clearly, we’re disappointed,” McNally said. “However, we ran a clean campaign versus our competitor.”

McNally said he hoped the new Democratically-controlled council would “take advantage of all the things we have started and keep the progress moving.”

Elected to fill the four full four-year terms on the Board of Education were Democrats Carol Burgess and Erika Striebel and Republicans Donna Funk and Robert Mitchell. Democrat Bonnie Bacon and Republican Lisa Terry were elected to two-year terms on the school board. They ran unopposed.
