Waterford ― A group of volunteers with the Friends of Harkness gathered in the gardens of Harkness Memorial State Park Thursday to deadhead, weed and trim plants at the gardens around the property.

Volunteers with the group work with Department of Energy & Environmental Protection to maintain the various gardens at the park. A group of 20 or more volunteers meets every Wednesday to work but when they are rained out, they meet on Thursdays instead. Throughout the year volunteers work in the various gardens, propagate plants in the greenhouse, maintain the farm orchard, do garden cleanup and perform maintenance.

“Gardening happens whenever the weather allows,” said volunteer Renee Meany, of Waterford, as she sat along a path in the West Garden using a shovel to dig out the roots of invasive weeds.
