New interstate highway signs tout state’s subs, pizza, hoops, foodies

Connecticut on Wednesday unveiled new interstate highway signs celebrating Electric Boat-built submarines, pizza, UConn basketball and the state’s gourmet food scene.

Four different signs have been erected at seven entry points, including one alongside southbound Interstate 95 in Stonington, near the Rhode Island border, which reads: “Welcome to Connecticut, Home of the Submarine Capital of the World.” Drone footage of the sign is available at Welcome to Connecticut: Home of the Submarine Capital of the World - YouTube.

General Dynamics’ Electric Boat division in Groton has been the primary submarine maker for the U.S. Navy since the early 20th century, and the Navy’s primary submarine base is in New London.

In addition, the submarine was invented in Connecticut by David Bushnell in 1775.

“These new signs are not just markers on our highways, they are a reflection of what makes Connecticut special,” Gov. Ned Lamont said in a statement.

“We want everyone entering our state to immediately feel proud of what we do well here, whether it’s making the nation’s best pizza, world class meals, national championships, or the most complex machines in the world,” Lamont said. “Each sign is an invitation to experience all that we have to offer as one of the best states to live, work, and play.”

“Welcome to Connecticut, Home of the Pizza Capital of the United States” placed in two locations on the New York border along I-95 in Greenwich and I-84 in Danbury. Lamont declared Connecticut the Pizza Capital of the U.S. in February with a gubernatorial proclamation that U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3rd District, read into the Congressional Record in May.

“Welcome to Connecticut, Home of the Basketball Capital of the World” erected in three locations on the Massachusetts border along I-91 in Enfield, I-84 in Union, and I-395 in Thompson. The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team won back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024, and the school’s men’s and women’s teams have now won 17 titles, six more than any other university in the nation.

“Welcome to Connecticut, Stop for a bite in the Foodie Capital of New England” on the Rhode Island border along U.S. Route 6 in Killingly. Connecticut chefs and restaurants have gained increased national recognition, capped by David Standridge, the executive chef at The Shipwright’s Daughter in Mystic, capturing the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast in 2024. Lamont proclaimed Connecticut the “Foodie Capital of New England” in February.
