Chelsea Groton Bank holds shred days
Chelsea Groton Bank is providing free document shredding services this fall, to protect confidential information and avoid identity theft. The dates and locations are as follows:
Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, East Lyme Public Library, 39 Society Road, Niantic
Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, Chelsea Groton Bank’s Headquarters, 904 Poquonnock Road, Groton (includes free hard drive destruction)
Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mystic & Noank Library, 40 Library St., Mystic
Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, St. Mary’s Church parking lot, 70 W. Main St., Baltic
Bring up to three file-sized boxes of documents to any of the events. During the events, Chelsea Groton will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor/Food Bank.
Mindfulness Walk in Norwich Sept. 14
All are welcome to the next Saturday Morning Mindfulness Walk in Mohegan Park, Norwich, on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m., sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Norwich and Norwich Youth, Family, and Recreation.
Walkers gather at the Spaulding Pond gazebo, rain or shine. The one-hour program begins with a warm-up and meditative reading followed by a silent walk around Spaulding Pond, concluding with time for sharing and reflection. The walk is accessible to those with mobility challenges.

Dine to Defeat Alzheimer’s disease
Several Dine to Defeat Alzheimer’s events are scheduled in September. A 50-50 raffle is held every event, with a percentage benefiting Alzheimer’s.
Events run from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 9 at Castello’s restaurant in Niantic (live music), and 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 at the East Lyme Shack restaurant, as well as 5-8 Sept. at Filomena’s in Waterford, and 4-8 Sept. 23 at Flanders Fish.
On Sept. 22 from 11-3, a bazaar will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 400 Main St., Niantic. There will be food, music, 50-50 raffle, silent auction and more. A $5 donation is requested at the door.

It’s time to ‘Run for the Hills’
The 3rd Annual “Run for the Hills” Trail Race will be hosted by the Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Veterans Memorial Park, 10 Memorial Park Drive, Niantic. An awards ceremony will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Niantic Public House (243 Main St., Niantic) with live music by the Low Tiders.
The challenging 3.2 mile race course will run across the bridge below Clark Pond, then follow the blue trail to the northern reaches of the preserve. The loop course returns on the red trail through a scenic section nicknamed the “Lunar Landscape.”

New Hempstead Diary to be introduced
The new, expanded edition of “The Diary of Joshua Hempstead 1711-1758” will be discussed at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Shaw Mansion in New London.
Patricia Schaefer will speak on the changes and additions to the new edition, and copies are available for $75. This edition includes 17 pages of new material, including omitted lines and entries, and corrected spellings.
Mysticalligraphers monthly meeting Sept. 11
Mysticalligraphers will hold its monthly meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 11. at the Mystic & Noank Library, 40 Library St. The annual meeting will include a show and share. For more information, phone 860-536-8477.
Alzheimer’s Association seeking volunteers
The Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut chapter, is seeking volunteer community educators and support group leaders in eastern Connecticut. Support Group leaders help to facilitate monthly support groups that meet with care partners and individuals affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Sub September at Groton Public Library
It’s Sub September at Groton Public Library, starting with a talk at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, on how how the Navy studies and works on preserving the world’s natural resources, presented by the Submarine Force Museum.
Other items include Submarine Adventures Storytime at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, using Tony Mitton and Ant Parker’s book, “Super Submarine,” to learn about submarines and create kid adventures. Recommended for ages 3-6. Registration required at (860) 441-6750 or grotonpl.org.
“Submarine Force Museum: Fathers of Ambition” will be presented Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 3:45 p.m. Discover how the creativity, ingenuity, and work ethic of David Bushnell, Simon Lake, and John Holland forged the way for the creation of the submarine.

Kiwanis Club golf tournament Sept. 20
The Kiwanis Club of New London Annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20, at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. The entry fee is $175 and includes greens fees, cart, goodie bag, box lunch and a buffet dinner. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The tournament is the club’s primary fundraiser each year and the proceeds go back into the community. Cabaret Night Out in Colchester
Colchester Community Theatre has announced its inaugural Cabaret Night Out from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28. at the St. Joseph Polish Society, 397 S. Main St., Colchester. September Circle of Friends events at Groton Public Library this month include a Junior Friends' Meet & Greet at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

North Stonington Historical Society book
North Stonington Historical Society has published a final book of poems by 106-year-old poet Anna Coit, titled “Early and Late: Reflections of a Centenarian.” The book is being offered in a limited run through Sept. 15. The North Stonington Historical Society at 1 Wyassup Road in North Stonington will celebrate the life and poetry of Coit at its second Saturday Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14.
