Gathering in Mystic included man in KKK robe, witnesses said
Mystic – Police Saturday afternoon responded to a rally near the Olde Mistick Village, where witnesses said a crowd of supporters for former President Donald Trump gathered, along with a hooded individual dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes.
Stonington police Deputy Chief Todd Olson said his department fielded several calls from residents upset after seeing a crowd gathered in a parking area not far from the Steak Loft Restaurant at approximately 3 p.m.
Olson said callers were distressed over the content of some of the props, which they reported included flags supporting Trump. He said there were no arrests and the crowd dispersed after about an hour. Olson said there were no permits filed for a rally at that site for Saturday.
Mystic resident Danielle Drea said she was driving her son to work at approximately 2:45 p.m. when she spotted between 20 to 25 people in the grassy lot holding, or standing near, pro-Trump signs.
“And there was someone there dressed in a KKK outfit,” Drea said. “I was a little startled and rolled my window down on my way back and yelled how disgusting it was and how the KKK has no place in any politics.”
The parking lot was empty by 4:45 p.m., though a vehicle sporting a “Connecticut For Trump” bumper sticker could be seen exiting the location.
Casey Gigalima, general manager for the Steak Loft, said she was pulling into work shortly before 4 p.m. when she noticed the crowd of Trump supporters.
“As I came in, the police showed up, as did some counter-protesters,” she said. “Our customers weren’t very happy to see someone dressed in a KKK robe.”
