Groton ― Friends Jim Smith, of Taftville, and Lauren Renaldi, of Salem, stood almost shoulder deep in the water of Bluff Point State Park Thursday chatting and laughing as they raked for clams.

“We’re having good luck today,” said Smith.

Wearing a wetsuit, he says he often views clamming as a year-round activity.

“If anything it’s best in the winter,” he said. “The colder the water the better they taste.”

He was planning on using the clams they gathered to make chowder as well as put them on the grill with butter and garlic for dinner.

“There aren’t many better ways to spend a beautiful day like this,” said Renaldi.
