UPDATED: Tree takes out power for 3,000 and closes Route 1 in East Lyme
East Lyme ― Power was initially knocked out to 3,000 customers here Monday afternoon after a tree fell across Route 1 in the area of Lovers Lane.
The road was closed in both directions from Lovers Lane to Dean Road and detours were put in place after the tree fell around 3 p.m., according to East Lyme Fire Service Deputy Fire Chief Erik Quinn.
He said the tree took out power and communication lines.
The fire department then responded to three fire alarm calls triggered by the resulting power surge, Quinn said.
The number of people without power was down to 128 by 7 p.m. Acting police Chief Michael Macek said 3,000 customers were initially out of power.
The road was expected to reopen Monday night.
