Williams School to build new athletic building in Waterford
Waterford ― A Williams School official said Monday that the school hopes to begin construction next month on a two-story building that will be built into a hill at its athletic complex in Quaker Hill.
Sharon Gaudreau, the assistant head of school for enrollment and advancement, said the 2,400-square-foot building will be used for maintenance and storage, and provide a small space for meetings and possibly classes.
The building will also feature a patio, Town Planner Mark Wujtewicz wrote in a staff report last month.
Members of the Planning and Zoning Commission voted to approve the building, which will be funded by the school, at a meeting last week.
The main campus of the Williams School, an independent preparatory school that serves grades 6-12, is located on the campus of Connecticut College. Though some of the school’s athletic facilities, including two gymnasiums, are on its main campus, most of its athletic facilities are at its complex at 120R Bloomingdale Road.
The building will primarily serve the school, Gaudreau said, but could be opened up for public use in the future. The school already rents out turf fields at the athletic complex to two sports organizations, the Sharks, an area lacrosse team, and Connecticut Rush, a soccer club based in Branford.
"Once the building is up, we do plan on having a neighborhood and media event to present the building, and a nice gathering so the neighbors especially can come take a look and understand its purpose,“ Gaudreau said.
