    Students plant trees for World Peace Day

    New London ― Students from the Regional Multicultural Magnet School walked a few blocks to Williams Park Friday to help New London Trees plant three trees during their celebration of World Peace Day, which falls on Saturday.

    The third through fifth grade students started the event singing, “Breathing in” and their school song “Here we are.” Those in grades 3 and 4 walked back to school, and the fifth graders stayed to help plant two of the three new trees in the park.

    The students helped dig the holes for two trees. One group planted an Eastern Redbud, while a hybrid American Elm was planted by the other group. The New London Public Works park crew and Maggie Redfern, of New London Trees, planted a second hybrid American Elm at the park.

    The fifth graders committed to watering the trees until the leaves fall off for the season.
