North Stonington registrars ask early voters to return to sign ballots

North Stonington ― The North Stonington Registrars of Voters issued a statement Saturday that through Oct. 31 early voters were inadvertently misinformed about the need to sign their ballot envelope.

“As a result, it is believed that ballot envelopes submitted during this period went unsigned by voters, which is required by law,” the registrars said.

Roughly 900 to 1,000 votes were cast during that time period, said Connie Berardi, Democratic Registrar of Voters. However, she said it’s unknown how many ballots were cast without a signature, since some people signed and others did not.

The registrars said that North Stonington voters who did not sign the back of the ballot envelope when they voted during the early voting days of Oct. 21-31 should go to the Education Center at 298 Norwich‐Westerly Road on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or on Tuesday, Election Day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. to correct their ballot.

North Stonington is part of House District 43, which encompasses Ledyard, North Stonington and Stonington, primarily in Pawcatuck and the areas north of Interstate 95.

The 43rd House District race features incumbent state Rep. Greg Howard, R-Stonington and Earl “Ty” Lamb of Ledyard, who is an unaffiliated voter endorsed by the Democrats.

In another issue, in Stonington, on the second day of early voting, some voters, though it is unclear how many, in the 43rd House district received by mistake ballots for the 41st District. Peggy Roberts, Republican registrar of voters, told The Day last month that the office was contacting everyone who voted that day to give them the opportunity to recast their ballot.

Lamb said Saturday that “it’s unfortunate we’re going through these learning pains,” but he knows the registrars from both parties are doing their best and trying to get matters organized.

“Things like this happen so hopefully we get lessons learned out of this and fix it going into the next cycle,” Lamb added. He said in both cases, the voting areas are strongholds of Howard, while Lamb said he is stronger in Ledyard.

Howard could not immediately be reached Saturday night.

North Stonington voters with questions are encouraged to contact Emily Lewis, Republican Registrar of Voters, and Connie Berardi, Democratic Registrar of Voters by calling 860-885-8800 or emailing registrar@northstoningtonct.gov.
