Local roundup: Vermont routs Tigers 9-3
Winooski, Vt. — Aaron Arruda homered and had two hits, and Jean Ruiz threw six scoreless innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Connecticut Tigers 9-3 on Monday in the New York-Penn League.
Ruiz (1-0) allowed one hit while striking out three and walking one to pick up the win.
Up 2-0 in the fifth, Vermont added to its lead when Greg Deichmann hit a three-run home run.
Carson Lance (1-3) went four innings, allowing two runs and five hits while walking one and striking out five for the Tigers (25-30), who are 4-8 against Vermont (33-26) this season.
Women's soccer
• UConn opened its 2017 season by playing host Syracuse to a 1-1 overtime draw. After the Orange (1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex Lamontagne in the 75th minute, freshman Zoe Steck, assisted by senior Tanya Altrui, tied the game less than four minutes later. UConn outshot Syracuse 18-11 and freshman goalie Mollie Kerrigan made seven saves.
