    Local roundup: Stonington finishes second to Woodstock at ECC gymnastics

    Danielson — Woodstock Academy won its ninth straight Eastern Connecticut Conference Championships title in gymnastics, topping second-place Stonington 141.7-131.85 on Wednesday night at Deary's Gymnastics.

    Woodstock junior Ali Crescimanno won the all-around title with a score of 35.6, following by teammates Maddie Grube (35.5) and Jenna Davidson (35.45). NFA teammates Anna Ciriello (34.7) and Arianna Cohen (34.15) were next and Fitch's Lindsey Denman was sixth with 34. NFA was third in the team score with 130.15 and Killingly was fourth with 92.9.

    Stonington was led by Cat Cassata's 33.55, while Lila Rich was third on balance beam (8.9) and vault (8.9) and teammate Ruth Greene was fourth in bars (8.6). Stonington coach Leslie Gomes was pleased with the outcome.

    "The beam stuck,'' said Gomes. "That was the key to everything. (Second-place) is awesome. I am so happy.''

    Denman was second on bars (8.7) and sixth on floor (8.65). Ciriello was second on floor (8.85), fourth on beam (8.85) and fourth in vault (8.85) while Cohen was fifth on beam (8.75) and vault (8.75). Woodstock's Abby Vaida won floor with a score of 9.05, Davidson won beam (9.2) and vault (9.2) and Crescimanno won bars (9.1). 

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Emmiley Genua scored 19 points as No. 9 Montville beat No. 8 Killingly 44-37 in the first round of the ECC Division II tournament. Kara Beaupre had 10 points, five assists and three steals and Emily Meigs had seven points and nine rebounds for Montville (7-14), which plays at No. 1 Plainfield in a quarterfinal on Thursday night.

    • Sam Falco scored 14 points and Bella Rubino 13 points as seventh-seeded Griswold downed No. 10 Wheeler, 41-25, in an ECC Division II first-round game. Molly Butremovic had six points and 11 rebounds for Wheeler (6-15) and Savannah Galluci had eight points and eight rebounds.

    • Jordan Lewis had 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals as Old Lyme thumped Westbrook, 55-24, in a Shoreline Conference game. Audrey Gavin scored 10 for Old Lyme (14-6, 12-6).

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Ta-Jae Jenkins and Mert Halavurte both scored 14 as St. Thomas More downed St. Andrew's, 63-51. Tyshun Bryant scored 13 for T-More (10-8), which opened the second half with a 16-0 run. Jenkins scored 15 points as T-More beat Redemption Christian Academy 62-56 on Tuesday. Halavurte had 11 points and Bryant scored 10 for the Chancellors.

    • St. Bernard wrapped up the ECC Division III title with an 81-67 win over Tourtellotte on Tuesday night. Max Lee, Joseph Beltran and Stanley Maynard scored 14 points each and Nathaniel Avery had 10 points for the Saints (18-2, 11-1).

    H.S. swimming

    • Williams School finished second in the boys' competition and third in girls at the CISAC Championships in Hamden. In boys, the team of Joe Sullivan, Cyrus D'Arcy, Hartmut Doerwaldt and Will Jarrett won the 400-yard relay in a personal-best time. Turning in personal-best times for the girls were Lena Rimmed (200 freestyle), Kate Pickens (50 freestyle) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Erin Motherway, Mia Taylor, Lucy Fader and Rachel Goldstein).

    Women's basketball

    • Gillian Gerton had 18 points and 11 rebounds as Coast Guard clinched a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament with a 70-56 win over Clark. Laura Irish had a season-high 11 points for the Bears (13-11, 7-8), who will be the seventh seed.

    Men's basketball

    • Domenico Santiago made 12 of his 15 shots and finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds as Mitchell routed Lesley, 90-77, in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Brayvon Young scored a game-high 29 for Mitchell (13-11, 9-4) and Alan Morgan added 11 rebounds. Joey Martin had 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Lynx (12-12, 7-6).

    • Liam Bruno had 30 points and six rebounds as Wheaton overwhelmed Coast Guard, 91-73, in a NEWMAC game. Ryan Fogarty had 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals for Wheaton (15-9, 7-6) and Duaka Ekwensi added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Noah Baldez scored 15 and Justin Kane 14 for the Bears (10-12, 2-11).

    • Paul Aversa had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists to pace St. Thomas More to an 83-69 win over Post JV. Brandon Martin had 12 points and nine rebounds, Adrien Nunez had 16 points and D.J. Mitchell scored 13 for T-More (16-13).
