    Local roundup: Saints advance to Division IV state quarterfinals

    Montville — Hunter Baillargeon scored 23 points as second-seeded St. Bernard School advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIAC Division IV boys' basketball tournament with a 58-52 win over No. 15 Platt Tech on Friday night in the second round.

    The Saints (22-2) will host No. 26 Rocky Hill, a 64-53 winner over No. 10 Amistad, in Monday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

    De'Andre Williams had 11 points and Max Lee eight points for St. Bernard.

    In other games:

    • Jeremiah Taylor made a running shot at the buzzer as No. 21 Capital Prep stunned No. 5 Old Lyme, 60-59, in a Division V second round game. Taylor scored 14 points and Tyler Oney 12 for the Trailblazers (10-12). Brady Sheffield had 15 points for the Wildcats (15-7) and Aedan Using scored 12.

    H.S. swimming

    • East Lyme's Ben Prouty and Nathan Ende had top 10 finishes at the CIAC Class M diving championships at Bulkeley High in Hartford. Prouty finished fifth overall with 342.45 points while Ende was 10th with 316.75. Weston's Liam Simmons won the event with 438.80 points. Waterford had a pair of competitors as Kody Dow was 19th (268.85) and Jason Blain was 21st (254.75).

    College wrestling

    • Sophomore Owen McClave and junior Nick Remke each won three of four matches to remain alive and secure All-America honors in their debuts at the NCAA Division III Championships in Cleveland.

    McClave opened with a 5-3 win over Delaware Valley's Brenden Velez before suffering a 1-0 loss to fourth-seeded Sam Bennyhoff from Augsburg. He recorded a 12-2 major decision over Mount Union's Nolan Wochna to remain alive and assured himself of earning All-America honors with a thrilling 2-1  win in a tiebreaker over Ithaca's Tito Colom. McClave will wrestle top-seeded Troy Stanich from Stevens on Saturday. He can finish no lower than eighth and the top eight earn All-America honors.

    Remke was beaten by third-seeded Anthony Arroyo from Baldwin Wallace 7-1 before bouncing back with a 10-5 decision overJohn Carroll's Blake Dixon. Remke then earned a 5-2 decision over Wisconsin-Whitewater's Nicholas Bonomo before pinning No. 7 Taylor Shay of Roger Williams, the Northeast Region champion, in 6:53 to assure All-America honors. Shay beat Remke 3-1 during the regular and 5-4 in the semifinals of the Northeast Regional this season. Remke will wrestle Cornell College's Ben Hewson on Saturday.

    Sophomore AJ Aeberli won a 5-3 decision over York's Joseph Sindoni before dropping a 7-3 decision to second-seeded Jairod James from Mount Union and losing 7-5 to Augburg's Tanner Vassar. Freshman Jonathan Wagner was beaten 7-3 by Ferrum's Antavian Leary before recording a 21-4 technical fall over Otterbein's Drew Kasper. He was eliminated by York's Hasan Alic 5-1.

    College indoor track

    • Coast Guard's women's distance medley relay team earned All-America honors by placing seventh at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. Junior Anita Green (3:42), sophomore Anna Beck (58.6), senior Ashlee Johnson (2:16.6) and freshman Kaitlyn Mooney (4:52.5) crossed the line in 11:50.97 breaking their school record of 11:51.91. Mooney will compete in the 3K on Saturday.

    The Bears' men's 4x400-meter relay team ran the sixth fastest time in the prelims to qualify for Saturday night's final. Juniors Jacob Pawlina (49.43) and Ben Taminger (49.07) and seniors Luke Rehfuss (49.75) and Raeford Penny (48.25) finished in 3:16.64 securing themselves a spot in the finals.

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College ended its season-opening Florida trip with an 11-3 win over Husson in Winter Haven. The victory came less than 12 hours after the Mariners (8-1) completed a doubleheader sweep over Waynesburg, 18-6 and 14-6. Steve Pagan had four hits and three RBI against Husson while Kyle Hartenstein and James Rangel added three hits apiece and reliever Brian Ricket allowed only one run on there hits over 6.1 innings to earn the win.
