    Local roundup: Mitchell baseball team routs Nichols 23-7

    Dudley, Mass. — Garet Griffin went 5-for-6, including a triple, while driving in three runs and scoring four, as Mitchell College route Nichols College 23-7 in a college baseball game on Wednesday.

    Peter Abate had two hits, three runs and three RBI for the Mariners (20-5) while Jason West had three hits, three RBI and two runs, Kyle Hartenstein had two hits, three runs and two RBI and James Rangel had two hits, three RBI and two runs.

    In other games:

    • UConn Avery Point broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning, beating Bunker Hill 19-2. Ryan Bagdasarian had two doubles and three RBI while Justin Keating of Waterford had two hits and two walks and Trevor Brandi added three RBI and drew three walks for the Pointers. Jordan Warecke of Old Lyme pitched six innings to earn the win, allowing three hits and two unearned runs while striking out eight.

    • North Stonington's Troy Stefanski (two hits, four RBI, two runs) hit a two-run double during a seven-run, fifth inning as UConn thumped UMass-Lowell 14-7. Isaac Feldstein went 3-for-4, including a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning, and scored for UConn (20-11-1). Also, Zac Susi added two hits, two runs and two RBI.

    • MIT rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 6-3 deficit and beat Coast Guard Academy 7-6 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Will Stephens had two hits for the Bears (8-16, 2-11).

    College softball

    Coast Guard erupted for six runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie in the first game and sophomore Audrey Bartz hit a pair of homers and drove in seven runs in the second as the Bears swept Mitchell 9-7 and 16-4 in five innings. Carly Hattman had three hits for the Bears (20-8), who earned their first 20-win season since 2013. Samantha Delconte and Waterford's Meghan Elphick had three hits for the Mariners (9-15).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard earned the first 10-win season in program history with a 17-10 win over Wellesley in the NEMAC. The Bears (10-4, 3-2) broke the game open in the second half by outscoring the Blue 10-4 in the second half. Senior Daria McKenna of Fitch had four goals and six assists to lead Coast Guard while Marietta Davis added four goals and one assist, Luisa Santos scored three goals, and Brenna Farrington and Haley McCue each scored twice. Davis, Santos, Farrington and McCue are all freshman.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Kevin Flores had two goals and two assists in Mitchell's 15-7 loss to Purchase. Jade Shields had two goals and one assist for the Mariners (0-11).

    H.S. baseball

    • Connor Cardi's two-run single snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh and Xavier defeated Norwich Free Academy 3-1. Tyler Briggs struck out eight for NFA (1-5).

    • Hunter Thornton pitched a complete game and had three hits, four RBI and three runs scored as Old Lyme defeated Portland, 14-4. Jace Funaro had three hits, four RBI and two runs scored, while Liam Holloway had three hits.

    • Wheeler dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Tourtellotte in an ECC Division III game. Bowen Baker pitched well in defeat for the Lions (2-4, 0-2), allowing no earned runs while walking one, striking out 11 and scattering three hits. Seth Jones added a pair of hits.

    H.S. boys' tennis

    • Conner Wyman, Brady Sheffield and Ted Wayland won in straight sets for Old Lyme in its 6-1 win over Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference. Quinn Hartmann and Judd O’Brien also won in doubles for Old Lyme (4-1, 4-1).

    • Zack Skrabacz won No. 1 singles as New London defeated Montville 5-2. Yoel Morel also won his singles match while Austin-Huang-Giuseppe Conte won No. 1 doubles for the Whalers (3-2). Chris Jaskiewicz and Cheuk Hei Chan won in singles for Montville (0-3).

    • Worcester Academy defeated Williams 5-2. The Blues picked up wins from Reese Berman at No. 1 singles and Devin Shah at No. 4 singles.

    H.S. girls' tennis

    • Emma Bass won No. 3 singles in Old Lyme's 6-1 loss to Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference. Bass defeated Emma Rogen 6-2, 6-1.

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Sophie Salger scored seven goals and Katia Bourganos had three golals and two assists as Williams School defeated St. Andrew's 18-6. Lexi Day and Rachel Luxton had two goals apiece and Lyndsey Noniewicz had seven saves for the Blues (3-0).

    • Waterford erupted for 11 goals in the first half and cruised to a 15-4 nonleague win over Haddam-Killingworth on Tuesday night. Jacklyn Lavoie scored eight goals for the Lancers (3-2) while Kaylee Swansen added two goals and one assist, Grace Briggs had one goal and two assists, Megan Foley, Emma Brown and Olivia and Gianakos each had one goal and one assist, Megan Wyatt scored a goal and Mikayla Brucoli had two assists.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • St. Andrew’s handed Williams its first loss of the season 6-4. James Knowlton had a goal and two assists, Eli Bunnell had a goal and an assist and Jack Yost had 14 saves for Williams (2-1).

    H.S. boys' track

    • Alex Schwindt won the high jump and pole vault, leading Fitch past Woodstock Academy 95-55. Ryan Poe (1,600), Om Patel (300 hurdles), Tom Readett (800), Adrian Albo (200), Jake McCarty (3,200), Kyrell Wilson (long jump), Nick Luther (javelin) and Thomas Joyner (discus) also won events for the Falcons (3-0).
