    Local roundup: Mitchell's Gaboury named NECC top rookie

    West Boylston, Mass. — Mitchell College freshman Sam Gaboury was named the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year in golf, leading the Mariners to a third-place finish in the NECC championship on Sunday at Wachusett Country Club.

    Gaboury, the former Montville High School standout, tied for fifth with two-day total of 158 to earn first-team NECC honors. Springfield College won the team title with 615, followed by Elms (635) and Mitchell (643). Jake Raichle of Springfield won the title with a score of 148.

    Mitchell's Michael McCarthy finished 11th at 160 followed by teammates Michael Izzo (12th, 161) and Nick Knisel (14th, 164).

    College field hockey

    • No. 3 Maryland scored the first four goals on the game and went on to beat No. 2 UConn in a nonleague game, handing the Huskies their first loss of the season. The game was a rematch of last season's NCAA Division I championship game, which UConn won 2-1. Bodil Keus scored twice and Bibi Donraadt and Nike Lorenz had a goal and an assist each for Maryland (12-0). Cecile Pieper scored both goals for UConn (10-1), Svea Boker had two assists and Antonia Tiedtke had an assist for the Huskies.

    Women's soccer

    • UConn lost its sixth straight game, falling to Central Florida 5-3 in an American Athletic Conference game. Elena Santos scored a pair of goals for UConn (2-11, 0-4) and Pato Jerzak assisted on both of them. Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky also scored for UConn, which trailed 4-0, and Regan Schiappa had an assist. 

    Women's tennis

    • Connecticut College lost to Holy Cross 5-4. Emily Migliorini won her match and teamed with Allison Falvey for a doubles win for Conn (1-1). Brooke Scully and Alexis Tsang won single matches for Conn. 

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Sadie Rudolph had a goal and assist as Weston rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Montville 3-2 in a non-conference game on Saturday. Alexis Meehan had a goal and an assist for the Indians (5-3), Olivia Meehan scored a goal, Lauren Velazquez added an assist and goalie Lauren Ross made 12 saves.

    H.S. cross country

    • The Williams School boys placed eighth and the girls 10th during Saturday's Westminster Invitational in Simsbury. The Williams boys had a pair of runners finish among the top 50 with Philip Knowlton placing 23rd in 19:48 over the 5K course and Hartmut Doerwaldt finishing close behind in 24th in 19:51. For the girls, Grace Cassineri finished 34th in 24:58 and Sydney Swann was 50th in 27:50.

    College volleyball

    • Trinity overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat Connecticut College 3-2 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match on Saturday. Game scores were 25-11, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 19-17. Emma Hewling and Avery Light combined for 25 kills for the Camels (4-9, 1-4) with Howley setting a single-game career best in digs with 25 and Grace McGee doing the same with 51 assists.

    Men's cross country

    • No. 24 Connecticut College finished second at the 19-team Maine State Invitational on Saturday. Danny Aschale led Conn with a second-place finish on the 8,000-meter course in 25:26.1 and teammate Scott Mason was fourth (25:30). Rounding out Conn's top five were Price Day (12th, 26:21), Russell Adam (21st, 26:39) and Josh Simensky (29th, 26:50).
