    Local roundup: Bears get off to a strong start in Class M boys' soccer tournament

    Stonington — Max Wojtas and Will Cannella scored in the first five minutes and the No. 3 Stonington High School boys' soccer team advanced in the Class M state tournament Tuesday with a 5-0 win over No. 30 New Fairfield.

    The Bears will play the winner of Wednesday's Ledyard-Rockville game in the second round.

    Jamison Magowan, Graham Johnstone and Jake O'Keefe also scored for the Bears, while goalkeeper Peter Fernholz earned his 13th shutout of the season.

    In other games:

    • Ian Spracklin had two goals and an assist as No. 11 Wheeler topped No. 22 Portland 3-1 in the first round of the Class S state tournament in a game played on the turf at Waterford.

    Spracklin (assisted by Matt Pierce) and Dylan Davino (assisted by Spracklin) scored in the first five minutes for a 2-0 lead, which the Lions (12-7) took into halftime. Spracklin scored again in the second half and goalie Bowen Baker made six saves.

    "Bowen was our key player, really, with the rain," Wheeler coach Joe Mendonca Sr. said. "It was our first win in a long time in the state tournament. We haven't made the states the last three years. It was very positive for them."

    Wheeler will next play at No. 6 Old Saybrook at 2 p.m. Thursday. Old Saybrook had a first-round bye.

    • Gael Badibanga scored his second goal with 15 minutes left as No. 27 Middletown rallied to beat No. 6 East Lyme 3-2 in a Class L first-round game. East Lyme (14-5-1) led 2-1 at halftime. Joao Oliveira scored for the Blue Dragons (6-8-3) and Connor Voegl had four saves. Joe Grubb and Noam Sokolovsky scored, Duncan Matos and Robbie Swenson each had an assist, and Sonny Lall had five saves for East Lyme, the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I tournament runner-up.

    Women's basketball

    • Ashley Burke scored a team-high 24 points as No. 3 nationally ranked UConn Avery Point jumped out to an 18-2 lead on its way to a 77-70 win over Gateway Community College. Mia Brennan, a Waterford High School graduate, had 18 points for Avery Point (2-0) and Julitza Delgado had 15. Gateway is 0-1.

    • UConn seniors Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson and junior Crystal Dangerfield were selected to the Wooden Award Women's Preseason Top 30 Watch List. UConn is one of two programs with three or more players on the list. All three Huskies were selected preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team.

    Collier was named to the watch list for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award. She was named an AP Third Team All-American in 2018.

    Samuelson was tabbed to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list. She was also named a preseason AP All-American and the American's preseason Player of the Year.

    Dangerfield earned a spot on the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award watch list.

    The second-ranked Huskies begin the 2018-19 season at noon Sunday against Ohio State at  Gampel Pavilion.

    Men's basketball

    • Freshman Mitchell Holdmeyer had 23 points and 15 rebounds in Avery Point's 85-75 loss to Gateway Community College. It was the second straight double-double for Holdmeyer, who had 22 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday's opener. Elijah Malbeouf-Boyd added 15 points and seven rebounds for Avery Point (0-2) and John Domijan of Montville scored nine.

    Men's soccer

    • Second-half scores from Dayonn Harris and Cole Venner sealed a American Athletic Conference semifinal berth for No. 4 UConn, as the Huskies defeated No. 5 Temple 3-1. The Huskies advanced to meet No. 1 UCF at 7 p.m. Thursday. UConn and UCF battled to a 0-0 draw during the regular season. Harris and Venner were on the receiving ends of assists by senior Abdou Mbacke Thiam, as the Huskies dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Temple 15-6 with seven corners. Goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano played the full 90 minutes without needing to make a save.

    Women's soccer

    • Eastern Connecticut State University junior midfielder Aly Clarke, a Fitch High School graduate, was a repeat selection to the Little East Conference first team after leading the Warriors in scoring for the second straight season. Clarke, one of five Eastern players named to the all-conference first and second teams, was one of two players to start all 18 matches for the Warriors. She led the team with 11 goals and 24 points, with four of her goals proving to be game-winners. She was named LEC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24. Clarke has scored 21 goals and 47 points in 53 career games at Eastern.

    Women's volleyball

    • Coast Guard junior Angelou Dunton was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference volleyball all-conference second team for the third time in her career. Dunton, a junior outside hitter, was second on the team and 11th in the NEWMAC with 258 kills. She was also third on the team in service aces with 34. and recorded 284 digs and 12 block assists. Coast Guard finished the season 18-12 overall, 5-5 in NEWMAC play.
