Cromwell — Britney DeRoehn scored the game-winning goal with 6 minutes, 20 seconds remaining as the Old Lyme High School girls' soccer team defeated Cromwell 2-1 Thursday in the second round of the Class S state tournament.

Fourteenth-seeded Old Lyme (10-5-4) is the three-time defending state champion. The Wildcats, however, lost to No. 3 Cromwell twice this season, both times 3-1, the second time in the first round of the Shoreline Conference tournament on Oct. 29.

"I told the girls, 'I mean, this is it,'" Old Lyme coach Paul Gleason said. "'If we can't do it here, we're going to be going home and wondering what could have been.' ... It all worked today. It really was a nail-biter of a game, but we just shut 'em down. My goalie only handled the ball three or four times and this was a really high-scoring team."

Mya Johnson, the senior all-state and All-New England player from a year ago who has been playing through several injuries this season — including the latest, a sprained ankle — scored to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first half on an assist from Kaylee Armenia.

Cromwell tied the game with 28 minutes to play, but DeRoehn, also a senior, scored the game-winner to send Old Lyme to Friday's quarterfinal round against No. 6 Portland beginning at 2 p.m. at Old Saybrook.

Old Lyme tied Portland 2-2 on Sept. 22.

"I don't know what condition my kids are going to be in," Gleason said of the quarterfinal, calling Johnson's performance "remarkable" in the wake of her injuries. "Right now, we're willing it."

Sam Gray made seven saves for Old Lyme.

H.S. field hockey

• Maddy Cassell and Miranda Arruda scored unassisted goals in the first half for No. 2 Stonington in a 2-0 victory over No. 7 New Fairfield in the Class S state tournament quarterfinals, sending Stonington to the semifinals for the second straight season.

Abby Mann made eight saves in goal for Stonington (17-1-2), which got an "outstanding" defensive effort, according to coach Jenna Tucchio.

"Colette Dreher controlled the ball in the middle all night and Jillian Holland shut down their right side, which is where they preferred to attack from," Tucchio said. "Abby Mann made several key saves in goal.

"New Fairfield is a strong team with a lot of speed. They play in a strong SWC and we expected a battle tonight. ... This was a well-played game against an excellent team."

Stonington will play No. 3 Immaculate in the semifinals either Tuesday or Wednesday at a site and time to be announced. Immaculate defeated defending Class S champ North Branford 3-1 Thursday.

H.S. boys' soccer

• No. 2 Stonington wasted no time in showing its dominance, scoring all its goals in the first half of a 6-0 win over No. 19 Rockville in the second round of the Class M tournament. The Bears (18-2) will host No. 11 Tolland in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Tyler Fidrych scored twice and Graham Johnstone, Sam Montalto, RJ Parrilla and Cooper Hall had goals as Stonington outshot Rockville 15-1 and had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. Jamison Magowan had two assists and Ben Abely, Jake O'Keefe, Parrilla and Montalto each had an assist. Peter Fernholz needed one save for the shutout.

• No. 6 Old Saybrook scored twice in the final 10 minutes and beat No. 11 Wheeler 2-0 in the second round in Class S. Paddy Ryan scored with 9:35 left in the game and the Rams also scored on a penalty kick five minutes later.

Bowen Baker made seven saves for Wheeler (12-8), which won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV title.

"Our kids played very well,'' said Wheeler coach Joe Mendonca Sr. "We did a great job against a very good team. We had a great season, I'm so proud of them. Three years ago we had 12 players and won one game.''

Seniors Seth Jones and Samson Hauptmann were part of that one-win team. Mendonca hopes the success will carry over.

"I hope so, but we need to get more numbers," he said.

H.S. volleyball

• East Lyme advanced to the Class M quarterfinals with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 win over No. 9 Bristol Central in the second round. The No. 8 Vikings play at No. 1 Woodstock Academy at 6 p.m. Saturday. 

East Lyme (19-4) went 0-3 against its ECC Division I rival this season. Woodstock won the season opener 3-2 on Sept. 7, won 3-0 on Oct. 18 and won the ECC Division I tournament final 3-0 on Oct. 31.

Sydney Iannantuono had 20 kills and 10 digs for East Lyme.

• No. 19 Fitch had a 2-1 lead before No. 3 RHAM, the defending Class L champion, came back for a 3-2 win in the second round. Fitch (13-9) won 25-21 before RHAM evened things 28-26. Fitch won Game 3 25-23 before RHAM won 25-15 and 15-12.

Nora Ryan had 25 kills, 16 digs and 18 points, Olivia Carney had 48 assists, Aby Hagley had 12 digs and Ny Ishmael had 12 kills for Fitch.

Men's basketball

• Senior Nolan Benson led four Coast Guard players in double figures with a career-high tying 16 points as the Bears beat Roger Williams 71-54 in the season opener for both teams. Jason Frazer added 14 points, shooting 4 of 7 from 3-point range, while Packy Witkowski and Noah Baldez each added 10 points for Coast Guard. Justin Kane had a game-high 13 rebounds and nine points while freshman Tyler Perez had three blocks. Austin Coene led Roger Williams with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
