    Local colleges: Mitchell women win NECC opener

    New London — Mitchell College rallied from a 15-point deficit in the first quarter to defeat Dean College 64-58 in its New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball opener on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

    The Mariners (1-2, 1-0) trailed 22-7 after the first period, cut the deficit to 32-27 at the half and took the lead late in the third quarter behind Jessica Lohneiss, who scored a career-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers.

    Francesca Pinard added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals for Mitchell while Amina Wiley just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

    In other games:

    • Connecticut College remained unbeaten by cruising to a 78-43 victory over Johnson & Wales in a non-conference game. Margaret Corcoran led the Camels (3-0) with 15 points as 14 of the 15 players who got into the game scored at least a point, while Emily O'Sullivan and Casey Walsh came off the bench to finish with 10 points each. Conn shot 51.7 percent from the floor (30 of 58).

    Men's basketball

    • Conn College fell behind 51-29 at the half and was routed by Eastern Connecticut 93-70 in a non-conference game. David Labossiere scored 15 points for the Camels (1-2), making three 3-pointers, while Dan Draffan added 11 points and Patrick Lazor scored 10.

    • Ryan Dull, a freshman from New London, scored five straight points during an 11-0 run that lifted UConn Avery Point to a 70-60 win over Holyoke CC. Waterford's Trevor Yeomans scored a career high 22 points for the Pointers (2-5) while adding seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Montville's John Domijan added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

    Women's hockey

    • Melissa Alexander's goal in the third period broke a scoreless tie and lifted Conn College to a 1-0 non-conference win over Castleton State. Jordan Cross and Ellie Branka assisted on the goal for the Camels (2-0-1), who held a 24-9 edge in shots, while goalie Carly Demora stopped all nine attempts for the shutout.
