Local roundup: OL's Johnson, Stonington's Magowan and Parrilla are All-New England picks

Old Lyme's Mya Johnson, who led the Wildcats to their fourth straight Class S state girls' soccer championship last month, was named to the 2018 All-New England team by United Soccer Coaches.

She was the only local player to make the girls' team, but a pair of Stonington seniors — Jamison Magowan and R.J. Parrilla — were selected to the boys' team.

Johnson, also a senior, scored her 100th and 101st career goals during Old Lyme's 2-1 victory over Immaculate in the state championship game. Magowan, a forward, and Parrilla, a defender played major roles for the Bears, who went 15-1 during the regular season, won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I title and reached the Class M state semifinals before losing to eventual champion Plainville 2-1.

All three became eligible for All-New England honors by making their respective all-state teams.

Johnson was named to the Connecticut Girls' Soccer Coaches' Association Class S all-state team, where she was joined by junior Victoria Hannaford of St. Bernard. Montville senior Olivia Meehan was named to the Class M all-state team.

Magowan and Parrilla were joined on the Connecticut Soccer Coaches' Association Class M all-state team by Montville senior midfielder Tyler Velazquez, while East Lyme senior forward Alec Kosinski was named to the Class L all-state team.

    College wrestling

    • Johnson & Wales, ranked third nationally, built an early 16-0 lead before holding off No. 25 Coast Guard Academy 22-15 in the Bears' first dual meet of the season. Each team won matches, but all of Coast Guard's were by decision, including a 11-6 win by Matt McGowan at 149 pounds over Da'mani Burns, the top-ranked wrestler in New England. Nick Remke (165), AJ Aeberli (174) and Patrick Irwin (285) also won for the Bears while Jon Wagner (197) lost a 5-4 decision to Michael DiNardo in a matchup of the top two wrestlers in New England.

    Men's hockey

    • Boston College completed a two-game sweep of UConn in Hockey East, holding off the Huskies 3-2. UConn (5-11-1, 2-9-1) suffered its seventh straight loss and eighth straight in the conference. Karl El-Mir and Max Kalter scored for the Huskies, El-Mir's a short-handed goal in the first period and Kalter's coming on the power play in the third. Goalie Tomas Vomacka made 29 saves for UConn. Boston College is 6-6-2, 6-1-2.
