    Local roundup: Ledyard boys lose to Granby on two late free throws

    Granby — Elliyas Delaire made two free throws with three seconds remaining to lift Granby Memorial to a 60-59 non-league boys' basketball victory over Ledyard on Thursday night.

    The Colonels (7-11) had rallied from a 35-27 halftime lead to take the lead late.

    Ken Turner scored 17 points for Ledyard while Omar Whitmore and Seamus McGrath added 12 points apiece.

    Granby is 17-2.

    In other games:

    • Providence Country Day pulled away late for a 70-63 win over Williams School in the Blues' regular-season finale. Grayson Guinan led Williams with 22 points while Zain Alam scored 19, including the 1,000th point of his career, and Nick Bonner added 16.

    Girls' basketball

    • PCD pulled away in the final eight minutes for a 40-31 win over Williams. Olivia Kaplan led the Blues (5-11) with 17 points while Katie Burzin added seven.

    Men's basketball

    • Brewster Academy outlasted St. Thomas More 91-82. The Chancellors (20-15) were led by Wayne Bristol Jr. with 25 points and Jared Garcia with 20. T-More hosts Putnam Science Academy on Monday at 6 p.m. in its annual fundraising game where all donations and proceeds from the game will go towards ALS research.

    • The Mitchell JV beat Avery Point, 64-61. Waterford’s Trevor Yeomans and John Domijan of Montville both scored a team-high 14 for the Pointers (9-19).

    Women's basketball

    • UConn's Napheesa Collier has been selected one of 10 candidates for the 2019 Katrina McClain Award, which honors the nation's top Division I power forward. Collier, a senior, leads the No. 4 Huskies in scoring (19.3) and rebounding (10.1), has 13 double-doubles and has scored in a double figures in every game. The list will be narrowed to five finalists next month with the winner being announced during the Final Four in Tampa, Fla.

    • Mia Brennan had 27 ponits, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals to highlight Avery Point's 101-12 win over Bristol Community College. Rebekah Sanders added 12 points and 25 rebounds for the Pointers (11-12) while Julitza Delgado had 17 points and 11 steals.

    Women's swimming

    • Connecticut College's 4x800-yard freestyle relay team finished third on opening night of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships at Wesleyan. The team of sophomores Andrea Higgins and Maddie Ford, freshman Vaughn Ammon and senior anchor Olivia Haskell finished in 7:28.97 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.

    H.S. hockey

    • Newington/Berlin ended the Eastern Connecticut Eagles' seven-game unbeaten streak with a 7-5 victory on Wednesday night. The Eagles (11-5-1) were 6-0-1 in their previous seven games. Ryan Huta had three goals and an assist for the Eagles while Will Cannella had one goal and one assist, Kyle Jacobson had three assists, Evan Tower two assists, Trent Hughson one goal and Kyle Marino one assist.
