Black Wolves rally in final quarter to beat Rock 13-11

Mohegan — The players had already left the floor and were celebrating in the back hallway, but the fans were still cheering heartily. That's because the 5,691 strong Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena had just witnessed the New England Black Wolves accomplish one of the most difficult things in sports.

The Black Wolves, having lost Callum Crawford to a game misconduct — he leveled Toronto's Bradley Kri, who went plummeting to the ground — played the final 4 minutes, 48 seconds of the National Lacrosse league game a man down.

And the Wolves didn't allow a single goal, hanging on to the 13-11 victory over streaking Toronto behind the defense of the core four — Brett Manney, David Brock, Andrew Suitor and Greg Downing — along side the mastery of the man his teammates call "Dougie," goaltender Doug Jamieson. Jamieson, who had his first career win just this year, finished with a career-high 47 saves.

New England (6-4) held up against 10 Toronto shots on the final, extended power play, with five point-blank saves by Jamieson, including one at the buzzer. Jamieson allowed one goal each in the third and fourth quarters as the Wolves came behind for the dramatic win.

"You're on the clock, right," New England coach Glenn Clark said of the finish. "That was on Doug, he made some unbelievable saves. It's impressive. We had a couple of plays at the end of the day. (Toronto) can get good shots from good players. You need Dougie to play well and he did."

"We went on a roll in the fourth," said Black Wolves rookie forward Dereck Downs, who finished with his second career hat trick. "That had everything to do with Dougie standing on his head. We got the ball moving, we got a couple of transition goals and Dougie stood on his head and there it is."

The Wolves started the fourth quarter trailing 10-7, having been shut out in the third quarter after Clark had preached all week about consistency.

Then New England scored five straight goals to start the fourth quarter and had another erased on a replay challenge.

Stephan Leblanc, aided by an extra attacker, scored assisted by Crawford and Suitor with 13:18 to play. The Black Wolves got the faceoff and scored again at the 12:37 mark as Crawford leapt around the left side of the net and dunked on Toronto goalie Nick Rose to pull within 10-9.

A potential tying goal by Crawford was taken off the board before Manney intercepted a ball and assisted Crawford just 25 seconds later to make it 10-10. Colton Watkinson added a goal and an assist on the next two goals, assisting Leblanc with the go-ahead goal and picking up a rebound on a shot by Nick Chaykowsky to make it 12-10 with 10:22 still to play.

The Rock broke their drought on a goal by Challen Rogers with 9:01 remaining, but New England's Adam Bomberry added a short-hopper in transition, assisted by Watkinson and Suitor, for the insurance goal the Wolves didn't know yet they would desperately need.

Crawford had three goals and five assists, joining Downs (two goals in the first 48 seconds) in registering a hat trick. Leblanc had two goals and four assists and Tyler Digby had a goal and five assists as the Wolves won their second straight.

"It was Toronto; that's my hometown team," said Downs, who was a fifth-round pick by the Wolves in the 2018 draft. "It's awesome. It's awesome."

Tom Schreiber had three goals and three assists for Toronto (7-2), which had not lost since Dec. 28 to the Georgia Swarm.

The Wolves will next play at home March 3 against Colorado.
