Ex-St. Bernard pitcher Rios suspended for minor league drug violation

New York — Baltimore Orioles prospect Willie Rios, a former St. Bernard School star, was one of two pitchers suspended on Friday for violations of the minor league drug program.

Colorado pitcher Luis De Avila was also suspended.

Rios, a 23-year-old left-hander, was 2-4 with a 5.32 ERA last year in nine starts and three relief appearances for Class A Aberdeen of the New York-Penn League. He was penalized 50 games after a second positive test for a drug abuse.

Rios was an all-state pitcher at St. Bernard, graduating in 2014. He was drafted in the 26th round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but opted to attend Division I Maryland.

He spent one season at Maryland before transferring to Florida Southwestern, a junior college, where he spent the 2016 season before being selected by the Orioles in the 16th round of the amateur draft. Rios also pitched and played first base for the Mystic Schooners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

De Avila was banned for 72 games following a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Boldenone, the commissioner's office said Friday. The 17-year-old left-hander, was 2-2 with a 6.16 ERA last season in seven starts and one relief appearance for the Dominican Summer League Rockies.

Nine players have been suspended this year under the minor league program, plus Kansas City pitcher Eric Skoglund under the major league program.
