Avery Point loses its opener at NJCAA nationals

The Avery Point women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start and lost its opener at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III tournament in Bethlehem, Pa., falling to Owens Community College of Ohio 93-79 on Thursday.

Avery Point, the No. 6 seed, plays No. 7 Passaic County (N.J.) in the consolation semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. Passaic lost to North Country (N.Y.) 92-56.

Mia Brennan of Waterford scored 29 points with seven steals for the Pointers (15-14), who trailed 23-13 after one quarter and 39-23 at halftime. Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 18 points and 23 rebounds and Julitza Delgado scored 20 with four steals for Avery Point. Moreina Moore led No. 3 Owens (24-8) with 29 points.
