    Local roundup: Pointers' Petchark named to NJCAA All-America team

    Groton — UConn Avery Point third baseball Alex Petchark was named to the NJCAA Division II All-America baseball team on Thursday.

    Petchark, who starred at Waterford High School, made the second team. He batted .469 (third in the nation) while hitting five home runs and driving in 25 runs. He .847 slugging percentage ranked him eighth in the nation while his .540 on-base percentage placed him 11th nationally.

    Petchark was also previously recognized as a Region XXI Rawlings Gold Glove Award recipient for his defensive play.

    • Steven Barmakian (George Washington) was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run as the unbeaten Mystic Schooners scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning without getting a hit to beat the Valley Blue Sox 8-7 at Fitch High School on Wednesday night.

    David Beam (East Tennessee State) began the Mystic 11th inning at second base per extra-inning rules. Vincent Martin (UMass-Lowell) was hit by a two-out pitch, and Michael Caruso (Fairfield) walked to load the bases. Beam scored the tying run when Will Lucas (Fairfield) walked, and Barmakian followed and was hit by a pitch.

    Barmakian had two hits, three RBI and a run, Shane Kelly (Bryant) hit a two-run home run, and Nolan Kessinger (UMass-Amherst) had two hits, including an RBI double, and scored for the Schooners (6-0).

    District 10 LL softball (10-12)

    • East Lyme defeated Waterford 6-4 on Wednesday night as winning pitcher Abby Robinson struck out 10 in a complete-game effort. Robinson, Emma Bayor and Ava Korinek each had hits for East Lyme while Alexa Collins allowed one hit with five strikeouts in three innings for Waterford and Melanie Martin had a double

    • Waterford defeated Montville 7-0 on Tuesday night with Ava Majeski earning the win and combined with Zoe Zito to strike out nine. Alexa Collins, Isabella Correa and Melanie Martin had two hits apiece for Waterford while Montville center fielder Taryn Feragne had five putouts.
