    Local roundup: Ex-UConn guard Adams signs with Pelicans as free agent

    While former UConn standout Jalen Adams went undrafted Thursday night, he signed a free agent contract with the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans and will play for their summer league team.

    Adams worked out for the Pelicans in the days leading up to the draft.

    A 6-foot-3 guard from Roxbury, Mass., Adams averaged a team-high 16.9 points, four rebounds and 3.4 assists in 26 games while shooting a career-best 48.7 percent last season for the Huskies. He missed seven games with a knee injury. He finished his career ranked 10th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,706 points and also stood No. 2 on the American Athletic Conference career list.

    New Orleans will play in the Las Vegas summer league starting on July 5. Adams signed an Exhibit 10 contract, enabling him to collect a $50,000 bonus if he ends up playing with the Pelicans' G League team. He also may have an opportunity to attend training camp.

    Turgeon named to USA staff

    Dave Turgeon, a 1983 St. Bernard graduate, has been named to USA Baseball's 2019 Collegiate National Team coaching staff. Turgeon, who currently serves as coordinator of instruction in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization, will serve as the bench coach under Louisville's Dan McDonell, who will manage the team.

    Turgeon, who played collegiately at Davidson and was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1987, enjoying a 13-year professional career that included stops in Holland, France, Taiwan and Mexico. He has coach at the minor league and collegiate level for the last 20 seasons, transitioning into his current role in 2015.

    The team will gather next week at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. before hosting the 8th annual USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series from July 2-6 at various North Carolina sites. They will then travel to Taipei, Taiwan, for the 19th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series from July 9-12 before finishing the summer in the 43rd USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series from July 16-21 in Matsuyama, Japan.

    H.S. baseball

    • Three local players have been selected to play for the Connecticut Junior team against a select team from Massachusetts on Saturday at noon at Muzzy Field in Bristol. East Lyme's Trystan Levesque, Montville's Rob DelaCruz and Wheeler's Bowen Baker will play on the Connecticut Select team after being chosen by a committee of high school coaches and recommendations from college coaches and professional scouts.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13-15)

    • Pawcatuck defeated New London 13-1 in the District 6 Babe Ruth 13-15 tournament. The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Creighton Wesson earned the win, pitching a complete game while striking out 12 of the 19 batters he faced with no walks and allowing two hits, and also contributed two hits at the plate while Bobby Dimock and Dorian White had two hits apiece. Matt Castagliouolo and Nakhi Snyder each scored three times for Pawcatuck. Randy Vidal had a hit and scored the run for New London.

    District 10 LL baseball (9-11)

    • Matthew Shampine hit a two-run single in the first inning and Waterford held on to beat Mystic 2-1. Shampine was the winning pitcher, striking out eight with one walk and allowing four hits over five innings. Gavin Polcaro pitched the sixth inning for the save. Jacob Schrage was 3-for-3 for Mystic and starting pitcher William Haugeto allowed two hits over five innings. 

    Tigers postponed

    • The series opener between the Connecticut Tigers and Lowell Spinners at Dodd Stadium postponed by wet field conditions and will be made up as a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. Both games will be seven innings. The scheduled fireworks show will now be held after Saturday's doubleheader.

    • The Tigers salvaged the final game of a three-game road series against Staten Island with a 5-2 victory over the Yankees on Thursday night. Eleizer Alfozon went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for Connecticut (3-4). After Alfozon's hit extended the Tigers' lead to 3-0 in the sixth, Kingston Liniak followed with and RBI double and Jordon Verdon added an RBI single to complete the four-run inning. Verdon also tripled and scored a run for the Tigers.

    Road racing

    • Preston's Dylan McGuire was the overall winner in the Liz Harris Cannonball Run, a one-mile race in Preston on Thursday. McGuire finished in 4:56, edging Preston's Digby Ludlow by a second. Mystic's Alanda Olendorf was the top female finisher, placing 18th overall in 5:59.
