    Local roundup: IronBirds homer in the ninth to top Tigers in opener

    Aberdeen, Md. — Zach Watson homered in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Aberdeen IronBirds to a 4-3 victory in a New York-Penn League baseball game Thursday night in the opening game of a doubleheader.

    The game was the continuation of Wednesday's game, which was suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning tied 3-3. Jack Kenley singled, tripled and drove in two runs for the Tigers (14-17).

    State LL baseball (8-10)

    • Kian Gordy, Dustin Powers, Chase Nolda and JT Sheppard all had multiple hits as Waterford defeated Clinton 7-0 in four innings in the Section 3 tournament being held at Pawcatuck. Waterford also received key hits from Mikey Johnson, Carson Gallerani and Andrew Benvenuti,  Sheppard scored two runs and Benvenuti, Nolda and Gallerani had RBI for Waterford. Waterford plays Newington at 6 p.m. Thursday.

    Zuliani tournament (11-12)

    • Waterford scored four runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 6-4 win over East Lyme in the Dominick A. Zuliani tournament in Groton on Wednesday. Sean Kramer of Waterford singled, doubled and drove in two runs.  Josh Bergstrom, Lucas Saunders and Brady Sutman had doubles for Waterford. AJ Montejano singled, doubled, homered, scored twice and drove in two runs and Chris Cambi doubled for East Lyme.

    • Dom Zuliani and Gabe Grossman had two hits each for Groton in a 5-3 win over Ledyard on Wednesday. Chase Jackson was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits over three innings with five strikeouts. Cameron Weber had two hits for Ledyard.
